Merry Christmas from all the staff, residents and committee at Abbeyfield House Strathaven.
The residents and volunteers spent a wonderful afternoon singing carols followed by a cup of tea and chat afterwqards.
A huge thank you to Simply Shed a group from Stonehouse Men Shed who came to perform for the residents. The group itself consists of 8 members but due to circumstances only 4 of the group were able to perform and what a job they did. The residents absolutely loved the band and hopefully we will see them back again in the not too distant future. .
Thank you to Graham Cooper and his band who performed for the residents on Thursday 19th October. It was a brilliant debut from the band who the residents thoroughly enjoyed.
Thank you to The Strathaven Strummers who sang for the residents on Thursday 17th August. It was a brilliant uplifting show which the residents thoroughly enjoyed.
A huge thank you to the Ukulele sisters who put on a wonderful show for the residents. The duo had been forced to cancel earlier in the year but it was well worth the wait. Performing on one of the hottest days of the year they made use of the new bi-folding doors putting on an excellent performance from the decking area whilst the residents enjoyed a cold refreshment. A great day was had by all.
The residents enjoyed a special Balloon themed lunch to celebrate the Strathaven Balloon Festival taking place in the town this weekend.
Thank you to Bill Menzies who sang for the residents on Thursday 17th August. Bill was supposed to be joined by his wife Linda who unfortunately was unable to make it. We are hugely grateful Bill was able to do the performance on his own and the residents enjoyed every minute of it.
Thank you to Marshall Harkness and friends who entertained the residents with various musical instruments and songs. The group put on a terrific performance especially considering it was one of the hottest days of the year. They also then kindly stayed to have a refreshment and speak with some of the residents who are always keen to quiz the performers.
A huge thank you to the Strathaven Pipe Band who played in the Abbeyfield gardens on Thursday 8th June as part of their Gala Day preparations. The residents absolutely loved seeing the Pipe Band up close and are already counting down the days to next years performance. We are hugely grateful that the Pipe Band take the time to put on such a wonderful performance each year as it means a lot to the residents. We wish them all the very best for their performance on Gala day.
Planting has begun in our new flower beds with new shrubs and plants having being planted. These will now grow and blossom in the next few months and will hopefully give the residents a nice colorful environment to sit and enjoy the new scenery over the coming summer months.
Thank you to Beeches Cottage Nursery who did an amazing job with the planting of the flowers.
The residents enjoyed celebrating the Kings Coronation in style with a special royal themed three course lunch before sitting down to watch the ceremony with a glass of fizz.
After the hard work of our gardeners and Chairman clearing out the old flowerbeds we received a delivery of ten tons of top soil in preparation for the new shrubs going in early next month.
Thanks again to James Baird Contractors and Tommy Hamilton Gardening Services for doing a fantastic job preparing the flower beds for planting which will hopefully begin early next month.
In the month of April we are having a major refurbishment of our gardens at Abbeyfield. Whilst retaining the existing lawn at the front of the house, all other flower beds and shrubs are being removed and new top soil placed. We have been working closely with Tommy Hamilton Gardening Services from Strathaven in preparing the flower beds for new planting.
It is now expected that the new shrubs and plant will be in place by mid-May, watch this space for more details..
The residents enjoyed a wonderful Easter themed day making Easter bonnets. This was followed by an Easter chick hunt where the residents searched the lounge for little chocolate chicks which had been hidden high and low. They then finished up with a relaxing cup of tea and a delicious hot cross bun. Thanks to the volunteers for organizing a brilliant day.
Magician Billy Gibson stunned our residents with a spellbinding magical performance which left all the residents asking for more.
A huge thanks to Billy for doing the show we hugely appreciate it as always especially as he took the time to sit with some of the residents individually after the show showing them more card tricks.
Abbeyfield regulars Jackie and Eric Rice once again put on a fantastic show for the residents who always love when the duo perform.
Also a big huge thanks to the house volunteers who helped to organize the day and hosted some tea and chat afterwards.
Author Liz Allen entertained the residents talking about 'The Devils Porridge: Freedom and Fear'. The residents were enthralled listening about the largest munitions factory in the world, HM factory, Gretna.
Thanks to Liz who stayed in the lounge afterwards for a cup of tea and chat where the residents were able to pick the brains of the author.
